More Than Kung Fu

A chronological tour through Shaw Brothers studio

David Chiang, wearing a brown tunic, stands outside next too a bush. He's holding a sword in his hand.

Have Sword, Will Travel

A re-watch to celebrate a milestone. I’ve now seen all of the 165 existing movies Shaw Brothers made between 1958 and 1969.

There are about 70 films that seem to be lost. Maybe (as happened earlier this year with Operation Lipstick) some of those will get a restored release.

But for now I’ve seen them all. So I re-watched this, the studio’s final movie of 1969. My initial review focused too much on the movie’s use of slow mo. I still think that the movie over-uses the technique, but outside of that it’s pretty good. I might swap David Chiang and Ti Lung’s casting (or bring in the brooding Lo Lieh to replace Chiang). But those are minor quibbles for generally good Chang Cheh wuxia.
